PRODUCT: Commercial ambulance liability

COMPANY: Glatfelter Insurance Group. Property-casualty coverage underwritten on behalf of American Alternative Insurance Corporation, an admitted affiliate of Munich Reinsurance America Inc.

BEST RATING: A+ (Superior)

AVAILABILITY: Coverage is available based on a limited broker distribution model, depending on the state. Interested agents should contact Glatfelter Commercial Ambulance (GCA) for more details.

FOCUS: Private ambulance companies have a delicate job ensuring the safety of the patients they transport. Countless safety precautions weigh on the minds of vehicle operators: Have we strapped in the patient properly? Secured the wheelchair? If we’re using a pelvic and shoulder restraint system, could ejection or injury occur? Every stop, turn or curve the ambulance driver takes must keep the patient’s comfort and safety top of mind.

Considering the large number of individuals relying on ambulance services each day, proper coverage while transporting and treating patients is important to private ambulance companies. A safe and conscientious ambulance operator shoulders great responsibility—as well as unique risks and challenges.

“It is these unique risks and challenges that make this a complex industry to insure,” says Troy Markel, president of GCA. “Every ambulance service provider has its own specific insurance needs.”

GCA is part of an organization that has been working with members of the emergency services community since 1969. The company’s sales, underwriting and claims teams are all specialists in the industry, managing ambulance and emergency service providers.

“We offer ‘out-of-the-box’ coverage that would only be considered options by other providers,” Markel says. “We also provide a detailed application to help appropriately analyze the exposures of risk for the client and risk control pre-certifications of each potential client. And we analyze loss runs and financials.”

UNDERWRITING: Coverage options include auto insurance for a variety of risks facing companies that use vehicles in the course of business; general liability insurance to protect a commercial ambulance company from unavoidable situations; property insurance to protect private ambulance property; portable equipment insurance for a variety of portable equipment; management liability insurance for monetary damages arising out of a wrongful act committed by an employee, officer, director, trustee, commissioner or volunteer acting on behalf of a private ambulance company; excess liability insurance, which provides higher limits upon reaching the underlying umbrella policy limits; group term life insurance for family security; and specialty benefits, such as accidental death and dismemberment, medical and disability.

MINIMUM PREMIUM: Varies based on coverage line. Preference for $50,000 and above total premium.

TARGET: Commercial emergency medical ambulance operations; commercial non-emergency medical ambulance operations; and paratransit/non-medical transport operations, not to exceed 60% of total call volume.

COVERAGE TERRITORY: Current offerings in IL, KY, MD, NJ, OH and PA, with planned expansion into NY and TX. Future expansion beyond these states is likely.
