Without disclosing particulars, Gary Uhlemeyer, senior vice president of workers compensation, says the company’s book of business totals about $100 million. To sustain success, 5Star is launching a marketing campaign to attract more independent agents. The message: The company carves out an underserved niche, catering to agents and brokers who are either in need of workers comp markets or lack the expertise to serve a particular class in this line. 

UNDERWRITING: 5Star writes mainly first-dollar/guaranteed cost program business, but it also welcomes self-insurance and other retention programs. Location, business type and premium size determine which company may quote the business.

MINIMUM PREMIUM: $5,000.

TARGET: Underwriters serve more than 500 class codes and welcome virtually any size or kind of business, regardless of payroll or number of employees.

COVERAGE TERRITORY: All non-monopolistic states.
