FROM THE FRONT LINES: BENEFITS

How did you get started at your agency?
I graduated college in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, which made career opportunities pretty limited. I wasn’t entirely sure what direction I wanted to take, but I was approached by the agency for an interview and that opened the door. I started out in commercial insurance as an account manager and spent three years in that role. In October 2024, I made the transition to the benefits side, which has been an exciting new chapter for me.
Why benefits insurance?
I studied human resources in college, so I’ve always had a passion for HR and the role it plays in supporting employees. Transitioning into the benefits side felt like a natural fit because it allowed me to dive deeper into an area that directly impacts people’s well-being. The benefits market is incredibly dynamic, with so many opportunities to learn and grow. I was excited to be part of a space that combines strategy with helping employees feel valued and supported.
Challenges in the market?
The benefits market has seen significant changes and challenges recently. One of the biggest issues is the rising costs both employers and employees are facing—healthcare premiums and out-of-pocket expenses continue to climb, putting pressure on budgets across the board. For small businesses, the challenge is even greater because there are limited carriers and plan options available to them. This lack of flexibility can make it harder for smaller organizations to offer competitive benefits, so finding creative solutions and advocating for clients has become more important than ever.
Future trends?
There’s a growing emphasis on personalization—employees want benefits that fit their unique needs, so flexible and customizable plans will become more common. Second, technology will continue to play a big role, with digital platforms making enrollment and management easier and more transparent.
Advice for a fellow agent?
Stay curious and be willing to learn. The benefits market is constantly evolving, so having a strong foundation in employee benefits and compliance is important. Build relationships—both with carriers and clients—because this industry is all about trust and collaboration. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and lean on mentors; there’s so much knowledge to gain from experienced professionals.
