House Extends NFIP Through Dec. 11

On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed yet another continuing resolution (CR), which will fund the federal government at current levels through Dec. 11. Importantly, the CR included a reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

This is the 36th time since the end of the 2017 fiscal year  that the NFIP has been reauthorized on a short-term basis.

The Big “I” continues to communicate with congressional leadership about the importance of reauthorizing the NFIP, explaining why a lapse in the program would be devastating for policyholders and negatively impact various industries.

The Big “I” supports a long-term reauthorization of the NFIP and recognizes the importance of a modernized program to increase take-up rates in both the NFIP and the private market. Absent such an effort, Congress must, at the bare minimum, ensure that the program does not lapse.

In addition to opposing any lapse, the Big “I” strongly opposes any policies that would harm the Write-Your-Own (WYO) Program, including WYO reimbursement reductions, or undermine the valuable and trusted role that independent agents play in offering, selling and servicing flood insurance policies.
