Staying Unmistakably Human in the Age of AI

By Patrick Galvin

Most independent insurance agents do not need more paperwork. They need more time for conversations that drive retention, referrals and long-term growth.

That is one reason artificial intelligence (AI) is getting so much attention. Used wisely, AI can help draft emails, summarize conversations, organize client information, create marketing content and speed up service requests. For busy agencies, anything that reduces routine work is worth taking seriously.

But efficiency is not the same as connection.

EXCEED and EXCEED Onboard help employees learn, grow and Stay Up to Date.

Clients may appreciate a faster quote or a polished email, but when something important is at stake, they remember how an agent made them feel. They remember the person who explained a policy in plain English or called after a claim just to ask, “How are you?”

Insurance has always been a relationship business, even as the tools and technology around it have changed. More than just coverage, people want to believe their agent understands what matters to them and will be there when life gets complicated.

AI can support that kind of work, but it cannot replace it.

The agents who will thrive will not be the ones who reject technology. They will be those who let technology handle the repetitive work so they can spend more time doing what only a person can do well: listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions and checking in after major life events.

None of this is complicated. In fact, strong relationships are built through small, consistent actions rather than grand gestures. The best relationship builders are not always the most outgoing people in the room or the most aggressive networkers. They are the people who stay visible, useful and interested. They make relationship-building part of their routine instead of something they think about only when they need business.

Use AI Without Losing the Human Touch

Generic communication is all too common. Much of what people receive is efficient but impersonal. This creates an opening for agents willing to communicate with warmth, specificity and care.

Here are five practical ways independent agents can leverage AI while focusing on authentic human connection:

1) Use AI to prepare. Before a client conversation, use AI to organize notes, identify coverage questions or summarize prior interactions. That preparation is valuable, but once the conversation begins, your curiosity, judgment and empathy matter most.

2) Set reminders. A customer relationship manager (CRM) can remind you that a client’s child is heading to college, a business is expanding or a referral partner reaches an important milestone. However, the reminder is not the relationship. The relationship grows because of the action you take next.

3) Make communication sound like you. AI can produce a decent first draft, but decent is not the goal. Before sending any message written by AI, ask whether you would actually say it. Can it be warmer, clearer or more useful? A few personal words can turn a generic message into one that deepens trust.

4) Reach out when nothing is at stake. Some of the most meaningful client contact happens outside the renewal, claim, quote or policy change. When you check in with no immediate agenda, clients sense the relationship matters beyond the transaction.

5) Protect the habits that make you human. Call instead of writing an email. Send a handwritten note. Thank the person who referred you. These habits may seem old-fashioned, but they are more valuable than ever.

The agencies that thrive in the age of AI will not be the ones that use it the most. They will be the ones who use it efficiently to create more room for trust, care and human connection.
