Safeco Rebrand to Liberty Mutual: What Independent Agents Need to Know

By Crista Walker
For more than a century, Safeco Insurance has been built around one core belief: independent agents matter. That belief, rooted in partnership and an unwavering commitment to the independent agent channel, does not change as we move to a single brand. In fact, it becomes even more important.
As we first announced last year, as of April 25, 2026, Safeco rebranded to Liberty Mutual. While the Safeco name is retiring, this transition is designed to strengthen our ability to serve and invest in independent agents for the long term.
Safeco’s legacy is one of deep partnerships with agents, and that legacy carries forward under the Liberty Mutual name. Just like when Liberty Mutual first acquired Safeco in 2008, agents will work within a clearly differentiated independent agent channel—now supported by a more recognizable brand.
This continuity is intentional. We know that trust, consistency and longstanding relationships are critical to agent success. Preserving those elements has been a guiding principle throughout this transition.
It’s no secret that the insurance landscape is evolving quickly. Competition moves faster, customer expectations are higher and brand recognition plays a crucial role in consumer decisions. As such, today’s agents need an established partner who delivers modern capabilities and adaptive solutions.
That’s exactly what makes this change so exciting. Liberty Mutual is a nationally recognized brand, familiar to the vast majority of U.S. consumers. When that brand strength is paired with the trust, expertise and relationships agents already bring to the table, it becomes even more powerful. It helps agents start conversations more easily, clearly explain their value, and compete more effectively.
At the same time, a single-brand approach allows us to innovate faster, simplify how we show up in the marketplace, and ultimately deliver greater value to our agent partners.
It’s important to stress that independent agents are not an edge case in this story: they are central to it. This is why the transition includes an increased investment in agent-focused capabilities and benefits.
We are introducing expanded marketing co-op opportunities and a new loyalty and rewards program that supports every employee in the agency, not just principals. Agents can also expect greater value from significant brand and marketing activations, with prominent agent-focused content and an improved “Find an Agent” tool on the Liberty Mutual website, and national advertising campaigns that point consumers to agents as trusted advisors.
We believe these are tangible signals of our long-term commitment to helping agents attract, retain and grow their businesses.
One question we hear often is whether independent agents will begin selling the same products as Liberty Mutual’s direct-to-customer channel. Let me reiterate: the answer is no. As part of our commitment to the independent agent channel, the products will remain differentiated, just as they are today.
Agents will continue to own the customer relationship supported by the same underwriting, service and claims teams they work with now. Safeco customers will continue to have the agent relationship they experience today, with the same policy, premiums and coverage. No additional action is necessary: the only difference is that their policy will be branded Liberty Mutual.
At its core, this transition is about focus and clarity. We are building on Safeco’s legacy and pairing it with the strength, scale and recognition of the Liberty Mutual brand. Independent agents are being supported through a transition that preserves what matters most while opening the door to greater opportunity.
We know there’s been strong affection for the Safeco brand, and many agents and employees have shared with us its lasting, positive impact. We will preserve that reputation—while at the same time, the new name brings a renewed commitment to be the most trusted brand for independent agents.
As we look to the future, I can confidently tell you this: we believe in the longstanding role of independent agents and are proudly putting the full weight of the Liberty Mutual name behind their continued success.
