Declaration of Independents: Brittany Woods

Brittany Woods

Commercial Lines Account Manager
Purves & Associates Insurance Agency
Davis, California

In 2008, a decent paycheck and benefits convinced this people person to accept a position as a receptionist for Purves. But Woods quickly moved up into personal lines, then commercial lines. The relationships she developed with clients and the impact she had on their lives soon convinced her that no other career path could be so fulfilling.

EPIPHANY MOMENT?

A client who was in an auto accident called to praise the promptness and efficiency of the carrier. We talked about how scary and stressful it is to be in an accident, and the lasting effects it can have—even after the damage is repaired. I was able to offer a real human interaction. “It’s just business” can be a dangerous mindset. Our business is about connecting and providing an honest service, and being there for someone in the most important way.

SATISFACTION?

It is humbling and contagious to work with nonprofits—to help the people who are always helping others, who are driven and passionate about making a difference in other people’s lives.

OUTLOOK?

Our industry has realized the importance of keeping up with an ever-evolving and changing marketplace. To remain relevant, independent agents and carriers must embrace technology—becoming efficient and seamless and providing easier interactions with our clients. I’m impressed by all the ways our agency management system is helping us bridge these gaps.

MOTIVATOR?

To constantly grow, do better, learn more. I love helping people, and that’s exactly what I get to do. I also love to learn, and this industry keeps me on my toes and gives me the opportunity to consistently expand my knowledge. It’s a never-ending journey, growing with clients as their needs change. “This product doesn’t fit your needs anymore? Let me find the one that does!”
