How Local Imagery Can Elevate Your Marketing

By Joseph Cox

Insurance is a trust purchase. Before a prospect calls your office or reads a word of your pitch, they’re already deciding the answer to the question: Can they trust you with their home, car or business? Your marketing materials should answer that question first.

For independent agents, local, authentic imagery is one of the few marketing advantages captive carriers and national insurers can’t copy. You are genuinely part of the community you serve.

Consumers increasingly say authenticity is what separates the brands they trust from the ones they scroll past. Eighty-six percent of consumers say authenticity matters when deciding which brands they like and support, according to a report from PhotoShelter.

For independent agents, that’s a major opportunity. Your competitors can outspend you on advertising. They can’t run ads in your market featuring images of their agents attending a local event.

The Evolving Market Toolkit

With a moderate financial and time investment, you can elevate and personalize your marketing materials in a way that makes them stand out locally. Agents often assume “real” marketing imagery means hiring a photographer or blocking out a full day for a shoot. It doesn’t. A single afternoon with a smartphone can produce enough material to fuel months of marketing.

Here are four ideas to get you started:

1) A few minutes at a community event. A sponsorship, a ribbon-cutting, a Little League team your agency backs—these events give you authentic content for social posts, newsletters and your next print ad, often for the rest of the year.

2) A quick walk around your office or storefront. This gives you exterior shots for local directory listings and interior shots that make your “Contact Us” page feel like a real place.

3) Local landmarks. Images that locals will recognize immediately let consumers know an ad is speaking to them directly and that you are a part of their community.

4) One team photo session. This can turn into headshots for your website, a group shot for your “About Us” page and individual photos for email signatures and social bios.

Replacing generic stock photos with authentic and local photography is one of the highest-leverage visual changes a brand can make. None of it requires a stock subscription, a studio or a significant marketing budget. It requires a few hours of intentional effort, a phone and a plan for reusing what you capture.

Once an agency has gathered footage and high-quality images, the return comes from putting it to work on social media, Google Business listings, the agency website, video ads, print ads, brochures and any other marketing materials the agency produces.

One good photo session or a few clips of local landmarks can carry your agency’s visual identity for months, at a fraction of the cost of external marketing support. In a market where every competitor is buying attention, a handful of authentic, local photos and videos is one of the most affordable ways to earn it.
