Progressive Insurance Announces New Cargo Plus Coverage

PRODUCT: Cargo Plus.

COMPANIES: Progressive Insurance.

BEST RATING: A+

AVAILABILITY: Agents appointed with Progressive Commercial.

FOCUS: Recently, Progressive Insurance announced the launch of Cargo Plus, a new endorsement that expands motor truck cargo coverage purchased by for-hire truckers and other eligible customers.

The Cargo Plus endorsement is automatically included on new Progressive policies with motor truck cargo coverage.

“As the No. 1 truck insurer in America [according to S&P Global Market Intelligence], we take pride in delivering solutions that meet the needs of our trucking customers,” said Peter Niro, truck product development manager, Progressive. “We routinely evaluate areas where we can enhance our product to become a destination for truck insurance, and the new Cargo Plus endorsement advances that goal.”

COVERAGE DETAILS: Motor truck cargo coverage offers protection in the event a trucker is legally liable for damage to covered property while in the trucker’s exclusive physical custody and control. The new Cargo Plus endorsement protects truckers by expanding coverage for perils attributed to wetness, rust and corrosion, and covers perils attributed to driver error and changes in temperature on refrigerated loads for customers that purchase refrigeration breakdown coverage.

Also, customers with collision coverage and motor truck cargo coverage can benefit from a combined single deductible in the event of a covered loss. For example, if a customer’s tractor, trailer and cargo are damaged in a single-vehicle accident, the customer would only pay the highest selected deductible instead of three separate deductibles for damage to the tractor, trailer and cargo.

UNDERWRITING: Premiums are influenced by a variety of rating factors, including but not limited to safety record, operating radius, garaging state, transported commodities and the selected limit.

COVERAGE AVAILABILITY: Subject to regulatory approval, Progressive plans to have the Cargo Plus endorsement available in 49 states by May 21 and in all states by the end of 2025. Refrigeration breakdown coverage is not available for policies written in California or Florida.

TARGET: For-hire trucking operations or for-hire motor carriers that transport goods up to 40 power units or up to 20 tractor-trailers.
