From the Front Lines: Health Care

How did you get started at your agency?
Before merging with Rich & Cartmill Inc. in 2023, I was lucky enough to work alongside my dad at his agency American Insurance Group, an independent life and health agency he started in 1987. As the agency grew, we knew it was time to improve our processing system and invest in more robust IT security. Rich & Cartmill not only lent us that opportunity but gave a stronger foothold into new markets and new opportunities.
Why choose health care insurance?
It started as a bit of bait and switch. My dad pitched it as a good possibility for a company car and a decent living. The car never materialized, but I found a rewarding career in problem‑solving and helping people in the health care market.
Changes in the health care insurance market?
I started in the business right before the Affordable Care Act became law, so all I know are changes and challenges. The complex changes that I see are the plan degradation year after year. The out‑of‑pocket maximums keep climbing, and the cost follows in lockstep. Even with a large population receiving tax credits on the individual market, the remaining premiums remain a burden for most.
The increase in premiums and limited options really affects our small employer groups, as well. My biggest challenge is finding a plan that not only fits my client’s medical needs but also fits their budget.
Future trends?
The movement has started over the last year or so, but I see more health maintenance organization (HMO) plans coming, especially in the individual market. The carriers are trying everything to control costs and manage as much risk as possible. In the group segment, I foresee more level‑funded and self‑funded options coming about for the healthy groups with favorable claims experience.
Advice for a fellow agent?
Stick with it. This industry is a slow burn, but once the policies start stacking up, things can really catch fire.
