There have been a number of federal and state laws enacted to protect the non-public personal information being collected by “financial institutions” in the course of doing business. Attend the “It’s No Secret” Privacy Protection Laws webinar on Feb. 17, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. ET, which will review some of the major federal laws that have been passed in recent years, and learn information critical to the protection of insurance clients’ non-public personal information. Among the issues discussed will be: the Fair Credit Reporting Act, one of the oldest laws providing privacy protection for all citizens; Gramm-Leach-Bliley as to the obligations placed on insurance personnel when collecting and sharing non-public personal financial information; and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which protects the privacy of medical information. Also included is an overview and discussion of the Drivers Privacy Protection Act, which relates directly to the privacy of driver information and the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act, a law that provides individuals easier access to their credit reports.
All these laws promulgated affect not only how all insurance personnel (agents, brokers, CSRs, underwriters, adjusters, etc.) protect private information collected, but also who should have access to it and how it needs to be purged when no longer needed. The various entities involved and the responsibilities of each will be provided. All of these laws affect either property/casualty and life, accident and health clients, or both.
Also reviewed will be the various state Security Breach and Notification Acts promulgated countrywide in addition to those passed to protect the confidentiality of Social Security numbers and prevention of access to credit reports.
